Cold test and "Wackelsteine"
Mid-November – most campers have long since gone into hibernation. Not us. When a brief window of good weather opened up, we took our Simba, an Iveco WM 40.10, out of the garage. Our goal: a second, crisp and cold short trip around freezing point to put our off-road camper through its paces.
We set off that same evening, spending a spontaneous night on the road – and in the first light of dawn, we were already immersed in the mystical world of Blockheide Gmünd in the Waldviertel region.
Here, in this enchanted moorland area, the legendary wobbling stones await. Massive granite blocks, shaped and smoothed by the elemental forces of the Ice Age, seem to balance impossibly on their foundations. With a little skill and technique, some of these giants, weighing tons, can actually be made to wobble – a breathtaking natural phenomenon.
And then: an oversized table of the Gmünden prehistoric giants with comfortable armchairs. Here, everyone becomes a dwarf! The perfect place for one of my favorite photos – Lilu sitting down to see how small she looks. A crazy motif!
It was a short, intense trip. Icy air, crunching frost under the tires, and a beefy camper pushing its way unwaveringly through the landscape. Travel preparation cold.
